America about to get a blood transfusion of O(bama) positive

Blaming the US auto industry for building what Americans wanted seems like a cop out.

Most logical comment I've read about this whole mishmosh. You're right- we did it ourselves....

I agree about "what people wanted"partly: it was not what we ALL wanted, as well as there is a reason Chrysler and Gm are in trouble and their vehicles are not selling. So obv. we do not all want them.
You are right too, GB.

The problem is once the marketing is set (and pollies try to keep it going) a turn around is not an easy thing to decide.

The good news is America has skilled engineers and can always find funding to get things running. Not so in Oz. The ideas are generated then folk flit off overseas to get it happening. California is popular at the moment.

Wow. Imagine if Aussie engineers helped drag America into the new world. Finally we would have done something to help you folk rather than prop up a dinosaur President hell bent on causing more trouble.
actually, declaring Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, apart from the abandonment of worker's entitlements, which the government ought to cover anyway, would allow GM protection of bankruptcy legislation, to continue trading, retain worker's jobs or a greater percentage of them, and trade out of the hole they dug for themselves.
Ah, now that's interesting. I seem to recall an airline filed for chapter 11 some years ago but I don't know if they got the business going again.

Is there a time limit on how long you have to get ship shape? Are they able to get finance if they are not paying previous lenders?

I agree, the govt should cover worker's entitlements. But then, this is a country where people die because they can not afford medical treatment. My greatest memory is when I taught high school in 1995. There were not enough text books for even ONE of the classes, and I was told the students would have to share the 21 books amongst themselves. I stuck the books on a shelf and told the kids to use them as dicitonaries when they were in class. Why did I just write about that? I wanted to illustrate where the countries' priorities have NOT been. Which is ultimately why the auto companies should be bailed out, so that the people who work there or who work at the companies who make their supplies, etc, will not be the ones who suffer for the stupid CEOs. What they should do at GM, if they are going to save it, is take away all that arsehole's assets (which prob. amount to at least a half bil) and divide it up amongst the workers as a bonus. Make him work for FREE. And the arsehole from Chrysler too. Oh, and take some of it to buy textbooks for poor schools...Ultimately, though, I think GM is a completely lost cause. This is supposed to be capitalism. How is the gov't floating a company that made incredibly idiotic decisions over and over for years, really going to help this country? What if instead of giving them billions, they let GM collapse, and used a few mil to retrain the workers and let them create their OWN company, one that built hybrids or completely electric vehicles? No shithead CEOs from the Good Ole Boy's Club either. Kind of a co-op thing or such. (Oooo-eeeee-oooo, someone might call that socialism. Oooo-eeee-oooo....but isn't tha a union? Wa-wap....striptease music....bom chicka bom...porno music...do wop...Motown time...)

I would like to add I wrote that before I had any caffeine. Now that I have had a sip, I do see some good points in my comment, but I went off on some weird segways..oh, well. Signs of genius...
Don't be worrying about tangents, GB. It's your opportunity to think out loud and test your thoughts.

Sometimes for me, it's not until I start committing to the written word that things start coming together. Yours are logical links too. I have a friend with a few conspiracy theories who makes enormous jumps that I simply can't follow.

Thanks for your thoughtful contribution.
not completely sure on the intricacies,Peter, but have a friend who still works for GMAC for the next several months while things are scaled down there. She was saying the bosses there aren't hiding anything and they're getting to read releases from the parent company on a daily basis. That brief explanation of Chapter 11 came from her.
