I see young Alexander has seen fit to criticize the awarding of the Nobel Peace prize to the current US President Barack Obama.
Obviously he feels he qualified on matters related to peace after his promotion of war and the attempted destruction of the Geneva convention during his chance to do something positive in easing tension around the world. Something he failed at dismally.
I'm not surprised Downer has failed to see the lifting of the tension caused by the shortsightedness by George W Bush. He was so locked into caveman politics he was never aware of the massive damage caused by Bush not understanding the international community.
His solution to more terror attacks? Get bigger guns and kill more people in the vain hope that you can kill more terrorists than you create. Policy FAIL.
Alexander did his bit to promote terrorist organisations too. He tried to credit the loss of an election by the Spanish Government to a train terror attack when in actual fact the Voters thought the incumbent Government were untrustworthy. Not even the Yanks fell for that one.
Another feather in Downer's hat is his support for water boarding. Yep. Alexander and his crew of moral pollies signed right up for the "water boarding is not torture" rubbish. Folk much smarter than he and especially those old enough to remember WW2 must have been horrified to see the weakening of one of the few protections available for POWs.
I was more than amused to see Lech Walesa complaining about the prize win too. When he scored the "Peace" prize I wondered what the reasoning was. If it was called the Democracy prize it would have made sense but at that time his efforts to destabilise the Polish Government were hardly promoting peace.
I'm sure the Obama detractors will moan long and hard over the awarding of the Peace prize but the World is already a safer place with the departure of Bush. The fact that Obama was lucky enough to be measured against his predecessor was his (and the worlds) good fortune. The fact that someone as shallow as Alexander Downer does not approve is just the icing on the cake.
Now I am getting nervous.
I recognise Rudd is far and away a more moral chap than John Howard could ever be but the crumbs of recognition from the last remaining Superpower is a powerful drug for pollies.
Here's the problem.
Afghanistan is an unwinnable conflict that the proponents of bigger bombs think they can pound into submission. Correct me if I am wrong, but I can't think of an example where this has ever worked. Even Sri Lanka is only scoring itself a break in proceedings. It'll be back bigger and uglier as the Government makes living conditions worse for the locals. It's human nature.
But I digress. To make the success of the Afghanistan program even more unlikely, the forces of goodness and light are made up of various countries who have pressure from home not to be leading the death toll. They all want the US to carry the larger can even though they are living a lot closer to the problem. It's not a fair ask and Americans must be getting sick of the costs of the policeman role. I sure would be jacking up about the human and financial costs if I was in their position.
The current situation shows that rather than getting their zones of control under er control, the Western nations have lost ground to the Taliban and now the Taliban are even able launch attacks in Pakistan where they recently destroyed around 200 vehicles to disrupt supply lines. Clearly they are hardly at their wits end.
The history books don't hold any comfort either.Something I am sure the Brits would be well aware of having been ejected twice. And the fact that Russia couldn't handle the place even with a 10 year effort and the benefit of their more relaxed rules of engagement means things are highly unlikely to be manageable any time soon.
The final icing on the cake is that for same strange reason, America thinks you can run a hearts and mind campaign while simultaneously delivering bombs via aerial and drone delivery systems. There is definitely a logic problem there. Even if you get it right 99 times out of 100 you still have a PR problem. Australia should, at the very least, refuse to commit more troops while this approach is persisted with. It's counter productive.
Currently the Aussie public is against getting further involved in this lost cause despite the ongoing efforts of the ABC media folk who are trying to push visiting Americans into asking for more help. It's not a small margin either. 66% of us do not want to commit more troops and I would be very interested to see the numbers for how many would prefer our troops to come home.
We might be spared from blindly following a la John Howard though. Seeing as Kevin 07 is prepared to go against his heart on the Aid / Abortion matter, it's possible he will respect the Voters wishes and resist the cameras and the back slapping for a sensible response.
- Want to start a trade war? Follow the legislative path.
- Want to dry up your Export market? Yep. This path will do that too.
- and want to pay more for your goods and services at home? Hey, you just managed a big trifector.

Just testing a new way of posting designs here after designing them on Zazzle.
For those of you interested in putting your designs in the market place, Zazzle is an interesting option. The margin is small but you get to road test designs without going into production yourself.
This is the first attempt of putting some Zazzle designs in to postings on Vox. And it's the start of a new group devoted to bumper stickers. Feel free to add your own and drop me a line if you need help to get started.
As interesting and smart as President Obama is, the best way to keep him on task is to keep an eye on his work. Something he has encouraged himself. This sticker is to remind Americans that it is in their hands to produce good Presidents.
The President Elect had requested use of the house prior to inauguration to allow his children to start settling in for the start of the school year, but the obviously cash strapped (Yeah, right) Howard seems to be sticking to his plans.
Obviously his infatuation with US Presidents doesn't extend to Democrats and his usual excuse of having to suck up to the US President is not longer valid.
It's a distinct change of direction for a man who couldn't abide political asylum seekers to now be seeking refuge in the arms of one of his few remaining supporters.
And the quality of the accommodation is somewhat removed from the internment camps he was so fond of putting children into during his term.
A fitting bookend to a man who expects the silver spoon treatment. I can just imagine George and John sitting around congratulating themselves on the awards they have granted themselves.
The story link from the AM program is here.
There can be no doubt that taking effective action against Global Warming is going to require vision, strength, and a sense of purpose from our Political Leaders. They are the folk who make the decisions that really count. Our role, in this unfolding drama, is to make sure our “Leaders” are very aware of our concerns and honour their responsibilities.
In Australia, up until this point in time Kevin Rudd was going hard at the problem and was doing things in exactly the right way. With a concerned population keen for some intelligent action, he got stuck into getting some studies done including one by Professor Garnaut and called for input from all interested parties. Rather surprisingly, the “thinking hard” approach rather than knee jerk reactions sent the Opposition apoplectic. It seems a party hell bent on waiting for America (aka doing nothing) would still rather have a nervous response than deliberate sensible decisions.
The excellent news here is that this approach is still very well received with the voters but last week I was amazed to see Kevin Rudd deliver a carbon reduction of a mere 5% of year 2000 levels by 2020 with a ramp up to 15% if everyone comes on board. That’s about as likely as George Dubya Bush winning Mastermind with the English language as his special subject. It’s also well short of the UN sponsored summit in Bali a year ago where a call was made for a 25 to 40% cut. Embarrassingly at that summit Rudd stood with George Dubya Bush against the target although he said we were waiting for the Garnaut report.
Under Professor Garnaut’s study, the limit was preferred as a 20% reduction from year 2000 levels by 2020 and even this reduction still has massive environmental damage factored into the big picture. The good Professor admits he has written off the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef and expects levels of damage to the Kakadu Wetlands, Alpine regions, and the Murray Darling Basin as well as a heavy impact on agriculture. Presumably the softer targets will mean even worse news for the environment and dare I say the economy.
Along with the low target we now discover that part of the plan for stimulating the Economy involves ramping up the coal carrying capacity for shipments to China.
Hmm. Instead of investing in the emerging technologies we are going to prop up a dying industry, and a damaging one to boot. I can’t help but think we have a Government struggling with a consistent plan. I don’t know how the figures balance out but factoring the China coal boost against the reductions might even be a backward step for the environment. Surely investing in sunrise industries will bear more benefit to both the environment and our economic future.
The intriguing thing is working out what exactly happened here. The polls show that Kevin is popular in spite of, or perhaps because of, the destructive approach taken by the Opposition. Yet a Labor spokesman claimed the target was low to retain Government at the next election. This is clearly incorrect unless
· There is a bit of bad news coming our way we have not heard of yet
· The Opposition is going to embrace Global Warming and develop a policy (unlikely)
· The Government has caved into pressure from the big players
· Or the Union movement from the Mining Industry has put some pressure on
· Maybe the huge work load has finally run Kevin Rudd out of puff
I’m sure there are other possibilities that haven’t occurred to me but others might suggest and some may even challenge the premise that the approach has gone soft, but if the decision is made for a political reason when the polls are looking so rosy then someone is out of touch or a smoke screen is being generated.
Looking overseas, we see an incoming President Obama who also looks promising as a bit of a thinker but I worry about the task ahead for him. The continuing announcements of a whole host of jobs being filled makes me realise he will have plenty of distractions in his new job. When you think of the mammoth task ahead and factor in Industries who prefer the free ride of the status quo, then the task is monumental indeed.
I recently added my electronic signature to the GetUp campaign to host a billboard showing our environmental concerns on a billboard that President elect Obama will drive past often. It’s a small gesture but hopefully keeps the message fresh and reminds him of the task at hand and that folk care. But how about the rest of the world letting Kevin Rudd know that you want to be able to tour the Great Barrier Reef in years to come with your Grand children?
Rather than jumping on George Bush’s case, let’s get on with getting our local pollies under control instead of letting them “Blame George” and go a little softer. Personally, I write to pollies in Labor, Liberal and the National parties. The Labor folk to encourage or challenge a decision and the Opposition parties (the main ones) reminding them they are still out of touch and how to get relevant. They don’t exist to oppose. They exist to offer a credible alternative government.
In summary, we need action to remind our pollies both at home and abroad of what we care about. We should focus on our local reps but also take the time to remind international leaders that we care what they do to their own country too. And remind them we spend money when we come touring.
We also need to not get side tracked by non-performers. Let’s get some action happening then go and deal out the penalties when we have more time.

Listening to AM (ABC Radio) this
morning, I was treated to yet another tirade of an American Senator who wants
to bankrupt the major US motor companies along with 3 million workers. Like the
Senators who stood against any bail outs before him, he is hell bent on revenge
no matter the cost to American workers.
I guess this is pretty much the same attitude displayed with applying US military forces under the Bush reasoning. Vengeance is the key rather than a considered approach that weighs up a wider view of the issues and considers the impact on others.
Thankfully the incoming President takes a wider view. It’s not a roll over though, he wants the top CEOs outta there as part of the deal. It sounds like a good idea to me. Blaming the US auto industry for building what Americans wanted seems like a cop out. And allowing the “collateral damage” of 3 million American jobs just to glorify in revenge seems small minded and counterproductive to the US economy.
